Overview
The Vjosa Delta is the coastal end of one of Europe's last major free-flowing river systems, where river, lagoon, wetland and Adriatic coast meet.
Why Protected
The river system is protected because of its free-flowing character, biodiversity, habitats and cultural importance for communities along the valley.
Biodiversity
IUCN reports that the Vjosa and its tributaries flow freely for over 400 km and support more than 1,100 animal species, including globally threatened species.
History and Community
The delta is tied to farming, fishing, settlement, river mobility and the wider story of Vjosa as a living river corridor from mountains to sea.
Current Threats
Coastal development, airport impacts near Vjosa-Narta, pollution, gravel extraction and habitat disturbance remain issues to monitor.
